Skin Fade vs. Taper Fade: Which Should You Get?

People use "fade" and "taper" like they mean the same thing. They don't, and the difference changes how your cut looks in week three.

The short answer

A skin fade blends the whole side and back of the head down to bare skin. A taper only shortens the hair at the sideburns and neckline and leaves the sides fuller.

Side by side

  • How much comes off: a skin fade takes the sides to skin; a taper only works the edges.
  • How it looks: a fade has sharp contrast; a taper is subtle and clean.
  • How it grows out: a fade shows growth in about two weeks; a taper grows out soft.
  • Upkeep: a fade every two to three weeks; a taper every three to four.

Get a skin fade if

  • You want a sharp, high-contrast look
  • You keep the top short to medium
  • You don’t mind coming back every couple of weeks

Get a taper if

  • You wear a longer top, curls, twists, or locs
  • You want a cut that still looks good a month later
  • You need clean but not dramatic for work or school

Still not sure?

Start with a taper. You can always go shorter next time, and it is a lot easier than waiting for a fade to grow back.
